Archival Hop Harvest

Here's an exemplary snap of summer work togs from the OSU Archives flickr set, Hop On, Brewing and Beer.  The caption of the image is Coeds with Hoes.  I'm going to shop from this photo for my upcoming trip the UK.  Look for me in London wearing slant stripes, head kerchiefs, rolled trousers and hop covered loafers.  Unsure whether TSA will permit hoe portage past Eugene security.

Archival Scout Trip

We love ACL's Kodachrome digitization project. On a small scale, I've done my own part to rescue orphan slide collections from Goodwill and neighborhood garage sales. But most of my finds remain unsorted in boxes in our back "bonus" room. In one instance, I salvaged a slide collection for its unique homemade carrying case.

It would be great if we could scan, tag and pool our collections into a single, keyword searchable database of images. For example, I'd like to be able to search out a women's trouser style from a specific year or decade. We need a Cushman collection for heritage clothing on Kodachrome.

I'm wishing I had been invited along on this found Kodachrome field trip from the 1940s. I'm assuming that the event was scout sponsored with a loose forestry education theme.

In packing for this scouting trip, I'd supplement my stock collection of buffalo plaid shirts, duck trousers or knickers with a few provisional accessories ordered from Boy's Life and Catalogue Manufrance 1931.

Wishful Filson

I've been wishful holiday shopping for discontinued Filson plaids. In Japan, you can purchase a classic Mackinaw cruiser, vest or matching hat in blue x black buffalo plaid, a fabric that was discontinued by Filson years ago. When I emailed Filson to ask about a custom order in the blue x black plaid, I was told that the fabric would not be available for domestic orders (though lap blankets and tote bags can still be found at Portland Filson).

As a consolation, I've been browsing the pages of a Filson catalog I reprinted here last summer (when I was more fixated on poplins and cruiser vests). The catalog taunts me with lost opportunities to own Filson garments that were the best of their kind--the forestry cloth hiking trousers and matching cruiser coat, for example. My latest nostalgic longing is for the red and black plaid cape coat (now only available in predictable greens and greys). I expect that many of the garments pictured below might be resurfacing in Japanese web shops in next year.

Original Hunting Vest

I'm including photos of the the original Filson cotton duck hunting vest, a favorite Filson design. The vest has a wonderfully arcane pocketing system and fits (me) like an A-frame tent. It was discontinued a few years ago but brought back by custom request. However, my understanding is that sales remain slow. So, please consider supporting the archival garment cause by purchasing one in 2010.
